How to Convert Minutes to Decimal Hours
Divide a number of minutes by 60. For an H:MM duration, keep the whole hours and add minutes ÷ 60: 7:45 becomes 7.75 hours.
Open the decimal-hours calculatorThe conversion formula
Decimal hours = total minutes ÷ 60. Ninety minutes is 90 ÷ 60 = 1.50 hours. For 7 hours 45 minutes, the total is 7 × 60 + 45 = 465 minutes; 465 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours.
Use this for durations, not for converting AM/PM clock notation. A time such as 17:00 identifies a position on the clock; a duration such as 7.75 hours measures elapsed time.
Minute-to-decimal reference table
| H:MM duration | Total minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|---|
| 0:15 | 15 | 0.25 |
| 0:30 | 30 | 0.50 |
| 0:45 | 45 | 0.75 |
| 1:30 | 90 | 1.50 |
| 7:30 | 450 | 7.50 |
| 7:45 | 465 | 7.75 |
| 8:15 | 495 | 8.25 |
Convert decimal hours back
Multiply decimal hours by 60 to get minutes. For 1.75 hours, 1.75 × 60 = 105 minutes = 1:45. For 7.45 hours, the fractional part is 0.45 × 60 = 27 minutes, so the duration is 7:27—not 7:45.
The converter supports H:MM → decimal hours, decimal hours → H:MM, minutes → decimal hours, and decimal hours → minutes. Choose the direction and enter the matching value. Decimal output has selectable display precision; H:MM output rounds to the nearest whole minute and identifies rounding.
Rounding a display is not rounding a timecard
One minute is 0.016666… hours. Displaying it as 0.02 does not make the recorded work period longer. Three separately rounded one-minute displays add to 0.06, while three actual minutes equal 0.05 hours. Keep minutes or sufficient precision for calculations and round the final display.
This tool does not set a legally valid payroll rounding policy. Do not change actual punches solely to make a displayed decimal easier to read. When you need hours between punches, use the time card calculator and the hours-worked guide.
Avoid invalid or ambiguous inputs
In H:MM, the minutes part must be below 60: 1:75 is not valid. Enter 1:45 or 1.75 in the appropriate direction instead. A duration can exceed 24 hours, but it is not a clock time. For clock notation, use the military-time converter.
